CAMEROON NGO Shadow Report’s Conclusion
We acknowledge the attempts and advancements made by the State in Putting into place some legal instruments and polices for the promotion and protection of women’s rights. The difficulties and challenges recognized and stated in the state report cannot be under estimated. Nevertheless, cognizance has been taken of the State’s proposals to increase their effectiveness in promoting women’s rights through grassroots awareness and advocacy, legislative reforms, reduction of poverty and HIV/AIDS transmission, strengthening of institutional mechanism, and lastly the strengthening of partnership with development partners and civil society.
It is necessary to highlight that the elimination of discrimination and the respect of women’s human rights will be more effective through the following:
The formulation of programs and actions geared towards,
- The elimination of patriarchal foundations and established stereotype roles;
- The elimination of societal attitudes hindering de jure and de facto equality of women;
- The improvement of access to information in general, and gender issues in particular;
- The creation of monitoring indicators to evaluate the progress of status of the women;
- The mainstreaming of gender in all laws, policies and programs;
- The repealing of all discriminatory laws;
- The enforcement of mechanism for the implementation of national and international instruments that ensure gender equality;
- The enactment of the law on the Family Code and the law on Gender Based Violence.
